There is not another fruit that shouts SUMMER quite like the watermelon! Even though this crunchy, thirst quenching fruit can be found in supermarkets all year-round, summer is THE season to buy them, when they are at their sweet and juicy best!

Not only is watermelon a delicious and refreshing treat on a hot summer day, it’s nutritious and loaded with vitamins and minerals. Research suggests that it may also help the inflammation that is associated with various health conditions such as asthma, arthritis, atherosclerosis, colon cancer, and diabetes.

Watermelon is jam packed with some of nature’s most beneficial antioxidants. These juicy gems are an excellent source of Vitamin C, and a good source of Vitamin A, notably through it’s concentration of the powerful anti-oxidant, beta-carotene.

Vitamin C is a water-soluble antioxidant vitamin, capable of neutralizing potentially damaging free radicals. Vitamin C helps support white blood cells, which combat infection, and are essential for wound healing. It is also needed to form collagen for healthy skin, and helps build other structural materials in bones, teeth, and capillaries.

The beta-carotene is converted to Vitamin A in the body. Vitamin A helps support the eyes, and keeps the skin, hair, gums and various glands healthy. Additionally, Vitamin A helps build strong bones and teeth, and aides in fighting infection by contributing to a strong immune system.

Watermelon also contains a highly concentrated source of the carotenoid, lycopene. Extensive studies have been conducted on lycopene for its antioxidant, and cancer-preventing properties.

To benefit from the most antioxidants, choose a fully ripened watermelon. Here are some tips to help you select the best pick in the patch:

A whole, uncut watermelon should be heavy for its size. The rind should be smooth, not too shiny, nor too dull. One side of the melon should have a distinctive area that is yellowish or creamy colored. This is the underbelly of the melon, which was resting on the ground during ripening. If this marking is absent, it may be an indication that the fruit was prematurely harvested, thus compromising the flavor, texture, and juiciness of this delectable melon.

If selecting cut watermelon, look at the color and quality of the flesh; the color should be deep, and free of white streaks. If there are seeds present, they too should be deep in color. Once cut, watermelon should be covered with plastic wrap, and placed in a refrigerator to best maintain freshness, flavor, and juiciness.
